„BIPLANAR HIGH-FREQUENCY FLUORESCENCE KINEMATOGRAPHY” (FLUOKIN) AT THE FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEIPZIG

„Biplanar what-exactly?” the interested reader might ask upon spelling out the title above. That’s also how the discussions began that Sascotec Horsepower founder and CEO Oliver Sandmann held with the institute’s director, Professor Mülling, and his colleagues following the company’s successful bid in a public tender issued by the institute.

In short, it is a three-dimensional X-ray technique that uses up to 500 images per second to precisely map the position of bones, joints, and soft tissues—even while they are in motion!

Until now, such measurements could only be taken using reference points attached to the outside of the animals’ skin or fur. During movement—especially rapid movement—skin displacement causes significant deviations of the measurement point from, for example, a targeted bony prominence. This distorts the results and, in some cases, significantly reduces their reliability. By contrast, the deviations measured using the FluoKin method are less than one millimeter and less than one degree! A quantum leap in accuracy!

The technology can be used not only for small animals such as dogs or cats, but also for large animals such as horses and cattle—though, for reasons of space and capacity, it is not exactly suitable for elephants. Because the radiation exposure is harmless, humans can also be examined. Not only medical research, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers could benefit from the measurement results; in a future phase, sports associations and clubs could also be potential users. But we’re not quite there yet. The facility, equipped with Japanese X-ray technology, only recently transitioned from testing to regular operation; it is the only one of its kind in Germany and one of the few worldwide.

Before the X-ray measurement, however, the gods had set a requirement that caused quite a headache due to the spatial constraints and content specifications: the construction and procurement of a treadmill suitable for this purpose! After all, the test subjects cannot walk around freely in a room that is already too cramped and crammed full of specialized equipment. Buy an off-the-shelf treadmill? No chance. Too many special requirements. Depending on the filming situation and the subject, the two ramps as well as all handrails, side walls, and panels must be quickly removable. In other words, light enough for setup and takedown, yet sufficiently safe and stable.

It is also X-ray compatible—that is, lead-lined—so as not to interfere with imaging. It can be controlled from various sides and will be equipped in the future with modern force-measuring plates and other features. Approximately 20 fundamental design requirements had to be addressed to meet the institute’s specifications. In short: This project required an experienced treadmill supplier with specialized expertise, a high degree of flexibility, and an equally high level of reliability.

The institute found the right partner in Oliver Sandmann, a manufacturer of high-quality horse training and rehabilitation equipment based in the beautiful Emsland region. His company, Sascotec Horsepower, already possesses considerable medical expertise following its acquisition of the internationally renowned Mustang high-speed treadmill from Switzerland, which is used in numerous veterinary clinics worldwide. In addition, Sascotec Horsepower is currently testing a new AI-powered health analysis system for horses, which is set to be integrated into its in-house treadmills in the near future.

And since taking on new challenges doesn’t make you any less intelligent, Oliver Sandmann designed the Leipzig-based company’s treadmill from the ground up after receiving the order: Tailored to the limited space available, meeting all medical requirements, designed for easy assembly and disassembly, ensuring safe operation for both the staff and the animals being examined, and maintaining the excellent material quality for which Sascotec Horsepower products are renowned worldwide. Mission accomplished! The treadmill works, and so does the X-ray equipment!

Exciting studies are now on the horizon that will yield entirely new insights and provide precise information about the position and (potential) stress on the skeleton, joint surfaces, tendons, and muscles during movement. The data collected from the high-speed images allow for precise analyses of current conditions. They thus also map individual clinical pictures, from which more effective therapies can be derived than was previously possible.

Wettringen (August 16, 2025) — The „Pferd & Reiter” Training and Rehabilitation Center, run by successful dressage rider and therapist Tessa Welp.

No, this woman doesn’t „see red.” She’s actually more of an „orange” kind of person. She’s far too lively and well-balanced to „see red.” Her infectious good humor, combined with her hands—which are as firm as they are gentle—as well as her extensive expertise and experience, rubs off equally on her four-legged and two-legged clients. And ideally, the horse and rider are treated together, because after all, they’re a team and influence each other.

From electrostimulation using Equitron/Omnitron to osteopathy and physical therapy, magnetic therapy, trigger point therapy, heat, light, or saltwater therapy, to the use of sound waves as well as local and whole-body vibration stimulation and aqua training—Tessa Welp relies on a wide variety of treatment methods to address an equally broad spectrum of health issues or, through preventive training methods, to prevent them from arising in the first place.

Oliver Sandmann was also impressed by this wide range of offerings during his visit to the rehabilitation center. The owner of Sascotec Horsepower wanted to see for himself that the Aquatrainer he had delivered and installed a long time ago was performing flawlessly, to the satisfaction of Tessa Welp and her clients. Mission accomplished—it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to! And when there are no problems to discuss, it’s a great opportunity to exchange ideas on how the equipment could be used even more effectively in the future. We already have some ideas. With all due modesty, we’re a little proud that we’ve become the quality leader in the market for horse training and rehabilitation equipment, as confirmed by an independent study. But we don’t want to dwell on the past. We still have plenty of great ideas for the future. That’s why we’d rather look ahead.

When we deliver our equipment—which is now in use in 21 countries worldwide—we see well-designed barn facilities with thoughtful details. Less well-designed facilities, on the other hand, lead to avoidable problems. Electricity, lighting, water supply, water treatment and disinfection, heating, ventilation, cooling, feed and bedding supply—all the way through to manure removal and recycling—should ideally be fully coordinated with one another. Since we are also successfully active in the fields of custom machine building and mechatronics, it stands to reason that we would now like to apply our expertise and international experience to assist our customers in the areas of stable construction, stable technology, stable equipment, stable hygiene, and stable design. Introduction to Aqua Trainer Angela Köbbing

Angela and Hans Köbbing were introduced to the Aquatrainer during a dressage course and tried it out with their own horses. They were thrilled: Further training sessions proved remarkably effective for building muscle and improving balance. Driven by the desire to offer their horses regular training sessions—and due to the lack of such opportunities in the surrounding area—they came up with the idea of purchasing their own Aquatrainer. They promptly restructured their painting business, and after carefully selecting the equipment manufacturer, Angela Köbbing launched her second venture: Aquatrainer Münsterland. After completing Sascotec Horsepower training, Angela Köbbing now offers other horses and horse owners in the Münsterland region the opportunity to benefit from the significant health benefits of aqua training.

Aquatrainer Presentation at Klitzenhof

Since 2016, Petra Brammen and her husband have been running the “Klitzenhof Riding Facility” near Düsseldorf. Through various modernization projects over the past few years, they have created excellent training conditions for dressage and show jumping riders. In 2017, the Aquatrainer was installed in the adjacent therapy room. In addition to the facility’s own boarders, the aqua trainer is also used by walk-in clients and rehabilitation patients. When it comes to caring for the horses, equine specialist Petra Brammen and equine physical therapist Claudia Gartmann form a well-coordinated team. Drawing on their extensive expertise, they familiarize the horses with the aqua trainer in a calm treatment environment and treat their various health issues with great success.

Introduction to Aquatrainer: Manfred Müller

As a former member of the Swiss show jumping team and in his profession as a farrier, Manfred Müller sought an alternative after being forced to retire from equestrian sports due to health reasons, so that he could continue to devote his life to horses. After thorough research into effective and cost-efficient training and rehabilitation equipment for horses, Manfred Müller discovered aqua training 14 years ago, decided to purchase a unit, and founded his „Bonau Aquatherapy Center.” Unfortunately, this aqua trainer proved to be notoriously unreliable: it seemed like the motor broke down every six months, leading to costly and time-consuming downtime that frustrated not only Mr. Müller himself but, above all, his clients. So the decision was clear: a new machine was needed!

His many years of experience with technical requirements, horse- and user-friendly functionality, and durability proved invaluable when comparing alternative aqua trainers. After careful consideration, he ultimately decided to rely on Sascotec Horsepower equipment when relaunching his facility. Since then, operations have run smoothly.

His „Bonau Aquatherapy Center” in Switzerland—which, incidentally, is the first of its kind there—has since become an institution that has gained nationwide recognition for the successful treatment of its „patients.” Manfred Müller is one of the most experienced professionals in Europe when it comes to aquatic training for horses. It is important to him that the training be individually supervised and tailored. The equipment must be operated correctly, and the workload must be adjusted to the specific medical findings, the horse’s current health status, its current performance capacity, and the established training goals. For him, aqua training is a source of fulfillment. He helps horses and their owners—and is delighted when his treatment plans benefit both!

A horse treadmill for Beatrice-Mary

Shortly before Christmas, we set off for Beatrix Hentschel’s place with an Elite X 10 horse treadmill. When we arrived about 6 hours later, we were eagerly awaited by a few goats and a hard-working crew of men. The treadmill had to be lifted into place with a crane through an opening in the double-bar fence. But with so much manpower, it was done in no time. After a quick adjustment, half an hour later it stood in its spot as if it had always been there. Now all that was left was to level out the 6% slope of the specially prepared paved area, and everything was ready. We removed the ramps and plugged it in. And an hour and 15 minutes after our arrival, test horse Q was already on the treadmill. Q, too, took to it like a pro. After finishing our coffee, we headed home with one less treadmill. What a picture-perfect team—we wish Bea lots of joy with our horse treadmill.

An Aquatrainer for Hof Büchsenschinken: Part 2 – The Training Session

(Hamburg) A week after the installation, we met with manager Mercedes Hönke for a relaxed briefing. The whole family was ready for the first test run. Thanks to the ground-level entrance, the experienced chestnut horse “Bocelli” quickly entered the aqua trainer and set off with practiced ease. After a training session of about 15 minutes—starting with a low water level—and various training tips from Sascotec Horsepower CEO Oliver Sandmann, the test run was successfully completed. Afterward, we enjoyed a small toast to celebrate the inauguration of the training device, which fits perfectly into the stable’s ambiance. Mercedes Hönke has created a stylish rehabilitation and therapy center for people and animals with a very special feel-good atmosphere. With a solarium, aqua trainer, kitchenette, future brine chamber, and fireplace corner, there’s hardly anything left to wish for.
